§ Mr. Rookerasked the Secretary of State for Education and Science if she will list in the Official Report the number of discretionary grant awards made by each education authority in England and Wales, the average amount of each award and the total amount spent by each local education authority on discretionary grant awards.
§ Mr. OakesComprehensive information on all discretionary awards is not collected by my Department, but the following table gives details of discretionary awards for further and higher education reported by the authorities as being designed to cover the full cost of fees and maintenance, subject to any 31W deductions made in respect of the students' incomes and those of their parents and spouses. The latest available figures from annual statistical returns are given for each authority.
In addition, local education authorities reported 37,500 "lesser value" awards
