Miss Maynard

asked the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland what is (a) the economic and (b) the military cost of the British commitment to Ulster for each year since 1966 where the economic cost should include all grants, subsidies and any other payments from the British Exchequer to Ulster, and the military cost should include the cost of paying and maintaing and training all troops involved in Northern Ireland.

, pursuant to the reply of his hon. Friend the Under-Secretary of State of 13th FebruaryOfficial Report, Vol. 944, col. 94]—gave the following information:

With regard to the economic cost—for the years 1966–67 to 1972–73—I would refer my hon. Friend to the discussion paper "Northern Ireland—Finance and the Economy" published in September 1974, a copy of which is in the Library. Part 3 of the paper deals with public expenditure in Northern Ireland, and United Kingdom subventions to or on behalf of Northern Ireland for the years 1966–67 to 1973–74 are set out at Appendix C of the paper. The comparable figures for later years are as follows:
