Mr. Brotherton

asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science what is the total sum of money that is paid (a) by local authorities and (b) by central Government on student union membership fees for the latest year for which figures are available.

Mr. Oakes

This information is not available. However, it is estimated that the total cost to public funds of student union membership fees for full-time students in the United Kingdom was about £13 million for the 1976–77 academic year.
