HC Deb 15 February 1978 vol 944 cc282-3W
Mr. Litterick

asked the Secretary of State for Defence if he will publish in the Official Report figures showing the defence expenditure of each of the member States of NATO and the Warsaw Pact, respectively, together with -figures showing what proportion this expenditure is of each country's gross national product for the last complete year for which this information is available.

Mr. Mulley

The information for member States of NATO is given below. There are no reliable figures for the defence expenditure of member States of the Warsaw Pact. The Soviet Union, in particular, has not been willing to take part in the UN Secretary-General's proposals for a pilot study on standardized reporting of military expenditure. Our
