HL Deb 14 February 1978 vol 388 cc1408-10WA
Lord BOYD-CARPENTER

asked Her Majesty's Government:

Whether they will amend the terms of reference of the Royal Commission on Criminal Procedure to enable that body to consider the question of appeals by the prosecution in criminal cases against sentences considered to be inadequate.

Lord HARRIS of GREENWICH

No. The scope of the Royal Commission's inquiry, which covers the pre-trial investigation of criminal offences, the process and responsibility for prosecution, and related aspects of the trial, is already very wide, and there is little connection between those issues and the question of appeals.
