HC Deb 02 February 1978 vol 943 c263W
Mr. Patrick Jenkin

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services what study he has made of the theory that the reduction in the lead content of petrol has led to a decreased incidence of infant mortality and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Ennals

It is known that the lead ingested from the emission of petrol is responsible for only a small proportion of the level of lead in blood. The possible relationship between lead in blood and the incidence of stillbirths and infant mortality is the subject of a joint study at the universities of Aston and Birmingham.
