HC Deb 02 February 1978 vol 943 c263W
Mr. Patrick Jenkin

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services if he will make a statement about the use of menstrual regulation as a form of abortion.

Mr. Ennals

Menstrual regulation is a term sometimes used to describe the procedure by which the contents of the uterus are evacuated when menstruation has been delayed for a few days but before pregnancy can be confirmed. The procedure has been used where, under the Abortion Act 1967, it would be lawful to terminate a pregnancy, but I understand that the legality of this has recently been questioned. We are considering the legal and medical issues involved.
