HC Deb 02 February 1978 vol 943 c277W
42. Mr. Spriggs

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department how many cases of mugging have taken place in England during the last two years for which he has details; of these cases how many victims received serious injuries; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. John

The criminal statistics do not separately distinguish cases of "mugging", a term which has no legal definition. Most offences of the type frequently referred to as "mugging" are recorded as offences of robbery, for which figures for the years 1972 to 1976 are given in Table 28 of "Criminal Statistics, England and Wales 1976" (Cmnd. 6909). Information relating to the injuries which may have been suffered by the victims of these offences is not collected centrally.
