HC Deb 02 February 1978 vol 943 cc323-4W
Mr. Hardy

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer how many seizures have been made and how many prosecutions initiated by his Department for offences against the Endangered Species Act.

Mr. Robert Sheldon

Goods imported in contravention of the Endangered Species (Import and Export) Act 1976 have been seized by Her Majesty's Customs and Excise on 17 occasions. No prosecutions have been initiated by Government Departments under the Act itself, but one prosecution has been taken under Customs legislation for evasion of the restrictions imposed by the Act. There was also one prosecution by Customs in 1976 for evasion of the similar restrictions previously imposed under other legislation.
