HC Deb 02 February 1978 vol 943 cc278-9W
50. Mr. Holland

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department if he is aware of the growing public disquiet about the present level of lawlessness evidenced by the number of crimes of violence reported daily; and what steps he is taking to strengthen the police forces.

Mr. Merlyn Rees

The Government are already spending £250 million more this year in real terms on law and order services than in 1974. In addition an extra £55 million will he available next year for law and order services, of which £9 million will be mainly for civilian support for the police, to restore substantially cuts in the police cadet scheme, and to make more provision for vehicles and equipment, to assist prison manpower and to extend and strengthen community service schemes.
