§ Mr. Bradleyasked the Secretary of State for Transport if he will list in the Official Report the total of expenditure which he has accepted for the purposes of transport supplementary grant in 1979–80 for each county council in England and the Greater London council, broken down by the main categories of expenditure; and if he will list the total of transport supplementary grant for each of these councils.

§ Mr. William Rodgers:A total of 4,452 staff were employed in my Department on 1st October 1978. The numbers in each grade and its equivalents—excluding those providing a common service for both my Department and the Department of the Environment—were:
§ Mr. William Rodgers:There will be an increase of about 4 per cent. in the public expenditure limit for local authorities' transport programmes supported by TSG in 1979–80. There will be £917 million to spend at November 1977 prices —over £1,000 million at today's prices—to which I shall be contributing £257 million TSG—£289 million at today's prices. This is enough to meet all but a small percentage of most counties' spending proposals. This grant is over and above the main Government assistance given to local authorities for all their expenditure, including transport spending, through the rate support grant.
In deciding what level of expenditure to accept for each authority, I have followed the policies set out in last year's transport policy White Paper—Cmnd. 6836. I have had particularly in mind the importance to the community of local authority financial support for public transport services. I have been more generous, in allocating the limited resources for new road building, to those authorities who seem to me to be pursuing this aim.
The expenditure and TSG allocations for individual councils are given on the attached sheet.
