HC Deb 15 December 1978 vol 960 c636W
Mr. Arthur Lewis

asked the Minister for the Civil Service how many civil servants on their present salary scales are worse off now in real terms than they were in 1964.

Mr. Charles R. Morris:

About 60 per cent. of the 564,370 non-industrial civil servants in post on 1st October 1978 were paid on salary scales whose scale maxima had increased less than the retail price index which had increased by 261 per cent. since 1964.
