asked the Secretary of State for Scotland (1) what were the numbers of students taking Gaelic, and at what levels, in each of the Scottish colleges of education in each of the last three years;

(2) what consultations were held with An Comunn Gaidhealach, local education

The decision to merge the Jordanhill department of Celtic studies in the department of modern languages was entirely a matter for the board of governors, but my right hon. Friend sought and received an assurance from them that the role of Jordanhill as a centre for the training of Gaelic teachers would not thereby be impaired. No qualified Gaelic-speaking secondary student was refused admission to Jordanhill in sessions 1976–77 to 1978–79.
