Mr. Robert Adley

asked the Secretary of State for Transport when the inquiry into the Winchester bypass was completed; when he expects to receive the inspector's report; and if he will tabulate, from a date on which the hearings were completed to the latest convenient date (a) the number of deaths and serious accidents per mile on the uncompleted South-West development area respectively, both absolutely and per head of the insured population.

Assistance made available under the Industry Act 1972 during the year ended 31st March 1978 was as follows:

section of the M3 between Popham and Compton and (b) the average number of deaths and serious accidents per mile on motorways in England and Wales for the same period.

Mr. Horam

The inquiry ended on 28th June 1977. The inspector's report has not yet been submitted to my right hon. Friends the Secretaries of State for Transport and for the Environment. The manuscript is at present being typed and I hope that the inspector will be able to completed his action on the report in time for it to be submitted this month.
