§ Mr. OakesFor the academic year 1976–77, the latest year for which complete information is available, the local education authorities in England and Wales, the research councils and the Department of Education and Science were responsible for 394,000 awards that were designed to cover the full cost of fees and maintenance of full-time students —subject to deductions on account of parental etc. contributions. The total value of the maintenance elements of these awards was about £245 million and the total fees expenditure about £85 million. In addition, local education authorities reported lesser value awards to about 47,000 students at a total cost of £6 million.
