Mr. Arthur Lewis

asked the Minister for the Civil Service whether, pursuant to his reply to the hon. Member for Newham, North-West on Friday 21st July, he will bring this information up to date by adding the latest Boyle Committee Report recommendations and include his recommendations for hon. Members over the same period of time as mentioned in his original reply.

The Prime Minister announced the Government's decision on the Tenth Report of the Review Body on Top Salaries on 4th July.—[Vol. 953, c. 97.] In the light of this statement, the following salaries will be paid from 1st January 1978:

Permanent Secretary to the Treasury
Secretary to the Cabinet
Admiral of the Fleet £21,871
Field Marshal
Marshal of the Royal Air Force

The recommended figures were, respectively, £45,000, £34,000, £28,000 and £28,000, which will be implemented in stages on 1st April 1979 and 1st April 1980.

The Parliamentary salary has moved by resolution of the House as follows since 1972:

  • 1st January 1972, £4,500.
  • 13th June 1975, £5,570 (£8,000 for pension purposes).
  • 13th June 1976, £6,062 (£8,000 for pension purposes).
  • 13th June 1977, £6,270 (£8,208 for pension purposes).
  • 13th June 1978, £6,897 (£9,372 for pension purposes).
