Mr. John Moore

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer if he will publish in the Official Report a table showing, for each year since 1945, in terms of both current and 1970 prices, the proportion of the gross national product devoted to net investment by manufacturing industry.

Mr. Denzil Davies

As the hon. Member has specified gross national product as the denominator in the proportions required, I assume that he requires gross domestic fixed capital formation to be used as the numerator. I refer the hon. Member to the answer given to him by my hon. Friend the Under-Secretary of State for Industry on 23rd June 1978—[Vol. 952, c. 359–60.]

Mr. John Moore

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer if he will publish in the Official Report a table showing for each year since 1945 the proportion of the gross national product devoted to defence expenditure.

Mr. Denzil Davies

I will let the hon. Member have a reply as soon as possible.

§3.2 per cent. in 1976.

Apart from the United Kingdom, 1975 is the latest year for which figures are available. Comparable figures for years before 1964 are not readily available. No figures are available for the Irish Republic and the Federal Republic of Germany. The quarterly information required is not available from the Quarterly National Accounts Bulletin, except in respect of the United Kingdom.

The percentages are given in the table in terms of gross domestic product; to convert the data provided in OECD publications to a gross national product basis would require a disproportionate, use of resources.
