HC Deb 01 August 1978 vol 955 cc237-8W
Mr. Eldon Griffiths

asked the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food what proportion of his Department's £7.2 million expenditure on research development in horticulture is used to support viticulture projects.

Mr. Strang

Research and development in support of viticulture by my Department is of recent origin and represented a negligible proportion of the £7.2 million expenditure on research and development on horticulture in 1976–77.

Mr. Eldon Griffiths

asked the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food if he will identify the research and development projects on viticulture now being conducted by the Agricultural Development and Advisory Service Efford Experimental Station, indicating the approximate expenditure and the number of persons engaged on each.

Mr. Strang

The research and development work on viticulture which is being conducted by ADAS at Efford Experimental Horticulture Station is concerned with the health of plant material and cul- tural requirements of vines. At present, two advisory officers each devote a small amount of their time to the work, the operational cost of which amounted to some £1,800 in 1977–78.
