Mr. Jim Callaghan

asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science how many civil servants there are in her Department; how many of these are Her Majesty's inspectors; and what were the corresponding figures for 1977.

Staff in post 31st July 1978: 2,669 including 395 members of Her Majesty's inspectorate. Corresponding numbers for 1977: 2,768 and 407. These figures include staff at the University Grants Committee but exclude those at the Science and Victoria and Albert Museums.
