HC Deb 24 April 1978 vol 948 cc420-1W
Mr. David Howell

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department whether he will supply a breakdown of all recorded offences concerned with vehicle excise licences during the most recent convenient 12-month period, listing the number of prosecutions, namely, for: failing to possess a vehicle excise licence, failing to display a vehicle excise licence, making false application for a vehicle excise licence, stealing a vehicle excise licence, and other vehicle excise licence offences.

Mr. Merlyn Rees

The information available on the number of fixed penalty notices issued for non-display of a valid vehicle excise licence and the numbers of prosecutions for offences relating to motor vehicle licences is to be found in Tables 4 and 8 of the publication "Offences relating to motor vehicles 1976". Figures of prosecutions for stealing a motor vehicle licence are not available.

Mr. David Howell

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department what estimate his Department has made of the total annual cost, during the last convenient 12-month period, of police investigations and of prosecutions connected with vehicle excise licensing.

Mr. Merlyn Rees

I have not made any detailed estimate but will write to the hon. Member as soon as possible and give him such information as I can.
