HC Deb 13 April 1978 vol 947 cc489-90W
Mr. Peter Walker

asked the Secretary of State for Transport how many bicycles there were in 1945, 1955, 1965 and in 1977, or the most recent 12-month period for which figures are available.

Mr. Horam

It is estimated from National Travel Surveys that at the end of 1975 there were 7 million bicycles available to private households in Great Britain. Toy bicycles, etc., not primarily intended for use as a means of transport, and bicycles available only to institutions or businesses are excluded. The corresponding figure in 1965 was over 8 million.

Earlier figures are not available.
