On present plans a force of four Whirlwinds will be retained in the search and rescue [SAR] role in the United Kingdom until about 1982; the United Kingdom Wessex SAR force will then be increased from six to 10 and the Whirlwinds phased out of service. Some Wessex will also serve overseas in the dual roles of support and SAR.
