HC Deb 06 April 1978 vol 947 c208W
Mr. Critchley

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs if he will raise with the Government of Brazil the effect on British citizens resident there of recent legislation obliging those who wish to leave Brazil temporarily on business or on holiday to deposit for one year interest-free bonds for £750.

Mr. Rowlands

The travel deposit is levied on all persons resident in Brazil on a permanent basis; Brazilians and non-Brazilians alike. We appreciate that this may cause problems for some British nationals and have been advising them as well as discussing the matter with the British Chamber of Commerce and Trade. We do not consider that there are grounds on which to base a case for exemption for those living in Brazil on permanent visas.
