asked the Secretary of State for Transport what is the maximum size of road transport vehicle currently permitted; and if he will undertake to permit no increase and to proceed to gradual reduction in maximum permitted size.

The harmonisation of lorry weights and dimensions is currently the subject of discussion within the European Community. The Commission's latest proposals envisage no substantial increase in dimensions.

Details of maximum permitted lorry sizes are as follows:
