HC Deb 05 April 1978 vol 947 cc135-6W
Mr. Trotter

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs whether he has now obtained the detailed report on alleged mercenaries in Addis Ababa as described in The Times newspaper which he advised the House that he had called for, Official Report, col. 1490; whether he has decided to make representations to the Ethiopian Government; and whether he will make a statement.

Dr. Owen

I have discussed the situation in Ethiopia with Her Majesty's Ambassador, who is in London for consultations. I received the Ethiopian Ambassador in London at his request yesterday. I reiterated to the Ethiopian Ambassador what I had said to the Deputy Foreign Minister on 18th January; that I consider the human rights situation in Ethiopia to be a matter of serious concern. The Ethiopian Government are therefore fully aware of the strength of feeling in this country on this subject.
