HC Deb 03 April 1978 vol 947 cc31-2W
Mr. Brotherton

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services what was the number of New Commonwealth immigrants who permanently left the United Kingdom in each month since 1st January 1977.

Mr. Deakins

The information requested is not available. However, estimates of the number of New Commonwealth citizens who emigrated from the United Kingdom based on the international passenger survey are as follows:

New Commonwealth citizens Thousands
Quarter of 1977—
First 3
Second 2
Third 5

An emigrant is defined as a person who, having lived in the United Kingdom for a year or more, intends, on leaving, to live abroad for at least a year. Emigrants to the Irish Republic are excluded, and so are persons of New Commonwealth ethnic origin who had acquired United Kingdom citizenship.
