HC Deb 03 April 1978 vol 947 cc39-40W
Mr. Freud

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department what is the current rate of remuneration for chief returning officers at (a) parish elections, (b) district elections, (c) county elections and (d) central Government elections; and how many hours of work he considers in fact necessary to perform this job satisfactorily.

Mr. Merlyn Rees

Fees for returning officers at local government elections are determined locally, and information on these fees is not held centrally. For parliamentary elections, returning officers' fees for conducting the election are laid down in the Returning Officers' Expenses (England and Wales) Regulations 1974 and vary according to the size of the constituency; this scale of fees will be reviewed before the next General Election.
