HC Deb 26 October 1977 vol 936 c786W
Mr. Marten

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department why the Commonwealth entry desk at immigration at London Airport has been abandoned.

Dr. Shirley Summerskill:

Separate immigration control channels for Commonwealth citizens at Heathrow, Terminals 1 and 2, which take short haul European traffic, were discontinued in November 1976 because there was an insufficient continuous flow of Commonwealth passengers to justify them and because by making more efficient use of the staff available it was in consequence possible to improve overall clearance rates through them.

A Commonwealth channel has been retained at Terminal 3, which takes trans-Continental traffic. The channelling arrangements at all ports are kept under regular review.
