HC Deb 26 October 1977 vol 936 cc884-5W
Mr. Greville Janner

asked the Secretary of State for Employment how many cases were heard by industrial tribunals during the first six months of 1977, and during the same months during each of the past five years for which records are available; how many and what percentage were claimed for redundancy or for unfair dismissal or for other rights, respectively; how many and what percentages were appealed against prohibition and improvement notices, respectively; and how many and what percentage in each category were successful.

Mr. Harold Walker:

These figures will take some time to collate but I will publish them in the Official Report as soon as possible.

Mr. Greville Janner

asked the Secretary of State for Employment how many protective awards have been made by tribunals arising out of failure to consult in connection with intended redundancies since consultation rules came into force; and what has been their total and average amounts.

Mr. Harold Walker:

Protective awards under Section 101 of the Employment Protection Act 1975 had been made in 68 of some 140 decisions of industrial tribunals promulgated by the end of September. Information about their total and average amounts is not available as tribunals are not required to make awards in respect of specified sums of money.

Mr. Greville Janner

asked the Secretary of State for Employment what has been the average award made by industrial tribunals to successful claimants in unfair dismissal and redundancy cases, respectively, in the first six months of 1977, and in each equivalent period during the last five years for which records are available.

Mr. Harold

Walker: No information is available about the average amounts of redundancy payments awarded by industrial tribunals. The median awards given by industrial tribunals in unfair dismissal cases are calculated on a quarterly basis and are as follows for the periods requested.

£
First quarter 1975 200
Second quarter 1975 171
Firs quarter 1976 195
Second quarter 1976 210
First quarter 1977 350
Second quarter 1977 355

The figures for 1977 comprise awards made under the provisions of the Employment Protection Act, i.e. awards consisting of both a basic and a compensatory element. No information is available for earlier years.

Mr. Greville Janner

asked the Secretary of State for Employment how many additional awards have been made by industrial tribunals; and what have been the maximum and the average of such awards.

Mr. Harold Walker:

I regret the information is not available. However the number of additional awards is believed to be extremely small.
