HC Deb 26 October 1977 vol 936 cc710-1W
Mr. Richard Wainwright

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services if he will list the extent of known fraud for (a) all social security benefits and (b) supplementary benefits for the latest available date.

Mr. Orme:

It is safe to describe as a "known fraud" only those cases in which the perpetrator has been prosecuted and found guilty.

The number of convictions for social security benefit fraud in 1976 was 18,711. Of these 12,183 related to supplementary benefits.
