HC Deb 26 October 1977 vol 936 c723W
Mr. Lomas

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services if he intends to list the type of drugs that may be used both in and out of hospitals; and what effect if any he considers such action would have in reducing the right of the doctor or the consultant to freedom of choice and clinical judgment.

Mr. Moyle

No. This would inhibit the independent judgment of a doctor or consultant in prescribing what is needed for his patients' treatment. However, my Department seeks to help doctors in their prescribing by making the British National Formulary available free to doctors in clinical practice and to final year medical students it contains a selection of most drugs likely to be needed.
