HC Deb 26 October 1977 vol 936 cc701-2W
Mr. Gwilym Roberts

asked the Secretary of State for Prices and Consumer Protection what study he has made of the increases in profits made by the major banks; and if he will refer banking profits to the Price Commission for a special investigation.

Mr. Maclennan:

On 12th September my right hon. Friend directed the Price Commission to examine certain charges for money transmission services made by a number of banks including the principal clearing banks. The Commission will be able to look at the clearing banks' overall level of profitability in preparing their report.
