§ Mr. Eldon Griffithsasked the Secretary of State for the Home Department if he will list the attendance centres available for the reception of boys aged 10–16 years indicating the officer in charge of each and the address.
§ Mr. John:This information is given in Home Officer Circular 136/77, a copy of which is in the Library of the House.
§ Mr. Eldon Griffithsasked the Secretary of State for the Home Department approximately how many police officers are undertaking duties in their non-duty time at junior attendance centres.
§ Mr. John:Although most junior attendance centres are managed by Chief Constables, acting on behalf of the Home Office, the staffing of such centres is not a police duty but is undertaken voluntarily, not only by police officers but also by others who are interested and can spare the time. The staff are paid by the Home Office at rates linked to the fees paid by local education authorities to part-time teachers. There are at present approximately 340 serving police officers engaged in this work.
