asked the Secretary of State for Social Services what is the length of the current waiting list at Leighton Hospital for patients requiring appointments with consultants in the following specialities: (a) general medicine, (b) paediatrics, (c) geriatrics, (d) general surgery, (e) ear, nose and throat, (f) orthopaedics, (g) urology, (h) ophthalmology, (i) dental surgery, (j) gynaecology, (k) obstetrics, (l) special care baby unit, (m) mental illness, (n) general practitioner maternity and (o) intensive care unit.

The only significant shortfalls against funded establishments are for occupational therapists and physiotherapists—both of them professions in which there is a national shortage. There are 29 vacancies for occupational therapists against an establishment of 72 (whole-time equivalent) and 21 vacancies for physiotherapists against an establishment of 116.
