HC Deb 30 November 1977 vol 940 cc269-70W
Mr. Tierney

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services if he will assist and advise community health councils to monitor and report upon patients who suffer the adverse side effects of the drug Eraldin.

Mr. Moyle

The identification and reporting of a suspected adverse reaction is primarily a matter for the patient's doctor, and I do not think that community health councils can take over this function. Eraldin tablets were withdrawn from the market in 1976.

Mr. Tierney

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services what representations he has received from community health councils and action groups on the adverse side effects of the drug Eraldin.

Mr. Moyle

In general, representations have consisted of requests for information on specific points, but some have suggested the need for an inquiry. A panel of experts is examining the scientific aspects of therapy with beta-adrenoceptor blocking agents in the light of experience with Eraldin.
