HC Deb 29 November 1977 vol 940 cc117-8W
Mr. Gordon Wilson

asked the Secretary of State for Transport how many officially approved tachograph calibration stations have so far been set up in the United Kingdom; where they are located; and what is the ultimate number of such calibration stations which the Department intends to establish.

Mr. William Rodgers

38 calibration centres had been approved by 25th November. They are located as follows:

Eastern Traffic Area 4
East Midland Traffic Area 3
Metropolitan Traffic Area 6
Northern Traffic Area 2
North Western Traffic Area 3
Scottish Traffic Area 1
South Eastern Traffic Area 7
South Wales Traffic Area 2
Western Traffic Area 4
West Midland Traffic Area 1
Yorkshire Traffic Area 5

The number ultimately approved will depend on demand from the industry.

Mr. Gordon Wilson

asked the Secretary of State for Transport how many vehicles have so far been fitted with officially calibrated tachographs; and what is the total number of vehicles which will require to be so fitted after 1st January 1978 when the EEC regulation will apply generally to all the stock of goods vehicles over three and a half tons weight.

Mr. William Rodgers

Approximately 565,000 United Kingdom vehicles are within the scope of Regulation (EEC) No. 1463/70. I regret that information on the number of vehicles in which the tachograph has been calibrated and sealed at a Government-approved calibration centre is not available.
