HC Deb 29 November 1977 vol 940 cc163-4W
18. Mr. Hodgson

asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science if she is satisfied with the observance of the religious clauses of the Education Act 1944.

Mr. Oakes

In the circular on curriculum issued today my right hon. Friend has asked a number of questions about arrangements for religious education in schools. With regard to the present law it is for local education authorities to ensure that their schools comply.

35. Mr. Wall

asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science whether, in view of the refusal to conduct an inquiry into religious education, the subject of religious education will be one of the selected subjects about which the local education authorities will be required to give information in the autumn circular.

Mr. Oakes

Religious education is one of five selected subject areas about which local education authorities have been invited to provide information in my Department's Circular 14/77, issued today.
