HC Deb 24 November 1977 vol 939 cc864-5W
Mr. Adley

asked the Secretary of State for Trade what has been the fiscal relationship between expenditure by the British Tourist Authority and overseas earnings from tourism for each of the last five years.

Mr. Meacher,

pursuant to his reply [Official Report, 23rd November 1977, Vol. 939, c. 737], gave the following information:

Details of the British Tourist Authority's expenditure are given in the Authority's annual accounts which are laid before the House and figures of expenditure by overseas visitors are given in Business Monitor M6 (Overseas Travel and Tourism) which is available in the Library. I am sure that BTA promotion has played an important rôle in increasing overseas earnings from tourism, but the relationship cannot be quantified.

Mr. Adley

asked the Secretary of State for Trade what steps he intends to take to enable the tourist industry to maintain or to increase its foreign earnings in 1978; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Meacher,

pursuant to his reply [Official Report, 23rd November 1977, Vol. 939, c. 737], gave the following information:

We shall continue to foster tourism as an important industry and to develop relevant new initiatives, for example by the bringing into effect of statutory price notification and the continuing tourism growth point experiments; and we shall continue to support and provide finance for the British Tourist Authority and the national tourist boards.
