HC Deb 24 November 1977 vol 939 c874W
Mr. Lawrence

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department what action he is proposing to take to introduce tape-recorded interviews between police officers and suspects.

Mr. Merlyn Rees

The question of tape-recording police interrogations falls within the terms of reference of the Royal Commission on Criminal Procedure. As I indicated in the reply given to my hon. Friend the Member for Stockport, North (Mr. Bennett) on 27th July—[Vol. 936, c.315]—I shall consult the Chairman of the Royal Commission, when appointed, before coming to a decision about a possible experiment in tape-recording.
