HC Deb 24 November 1977 vol 939 cc828-9W
Mr. Arthur Lewis

asked the Secretary of State for the Environment whether he will give a detailed list of the houses, flats or properties now allocated to or occupied by Ministers of the Crown, a description of the size of such premises, what is included in the use of the building, so far as cleaning, heating, lighting and upkeep is concerned and the rateable value of the buildings so occupied in each case.

Minister Address Approximate area of residence Rateable value
sq.ft. £
The Chancellor of the Exchequer 11 Downing Street 4,800 3,722
The Secretary of State for Defence Admiralty House 5,000 4,068
Home Secretary Admiralty House 1,300 1,076
The Secretary of State for Northern Ireland Admiralty House 3,700 2,888
The Lord Chancellor House of Lords 4,100 3,555

The residences form part of larger Government establishments from which they cannot be fully separated, and, therefore, the rateable values are notional. Heating, lighting and any specialised cleaning of furniture and fabric are included with the general upkeep services provided, but Ministers are responsible for their own domestic cleaning arrangements.
