HC Deb 24 November 1977 vol 939 cc882-3W
Mr. David Watkins

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs (1) whether in view of the possibility of their being used for internal oppression, he will refuse to permit the sale of armoured vehicles to El Salvador;

(2) what assurances he is seeking from the Government of El Salvador in connection with the proposed sale of armoured vehicles to that country.

Mr. Mulley

I have been asked to reply.

A small number of armoured vehicles are due to be supplied under a contract signed earlier this year. An assurance will be required that the vehicles, intended for external defence, will not give any support to forces opposed to our garrison in Belize.
