HC Deb 24 November 1977 vol 939 c882W
Mrs. Jeger

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs, if he will make a statement on the present situation in Cyprus; and what progress has been made towards obtaining compensation for United Kingdom citizens for injury and loss and damage caused by the Turkish invasion of Cyprus in 1974.

Mr. Rowlands

The Government are concerned at the recent lack of movement towards a negotiated settlement in Cyprus. We believe that the inter-communal talks offer the best chance of progress, and hope that they will be resumed as soon as possible. On compensation my hon. Friend had useful discussions with the Turkish Foreign Minister in September, and a senior official is visiting Cyprus and Turkey next month to have further discussions with the Turkish Cypriot and Turkish authorities about the early establishment of compensation procedures.
