asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer how many men employed in his Department on 14th November were in receipt of wages or salaries at or below those paid at the basic rate of firemen.

Taking the gross weekly basic pay of a fully qualified fireman in London as the comparison—£70.55 per week excluding the 1977 pay supplement—there are, as at the first week in November 1977, 287 men in the Treasury with gross earnings at or below those of a fireman.
