asked the Secretary of State for the Environment what are the latest available figures for the commercial use of inland waterways; and what plans he has to increase this usage.

The latest available figures for traffic on the British Waterways Board's commercial waterways is for the period 1st January to 10th September 1977 and totalled 48.8 million tonne kilometres. Increased usage is a matter for the Board.
