asked the Secretary of State for Employment how many employees up to 30th September 1977 have received redundancy payments since the Redundancy Payments Act came into operation; what was the average received by each redundant employee; and what is the total amount paid out.

The following information relates to employees in respect of whom payments, including rebates paid to employers and payments direct to employees, were made from the Redundancy Fund since its inception on 6th December 1965 up to 30th September 1977:

  • Number of employees—3,061,929.
  • Average amount received—£363.
  • Total amount paid out—£1,112,366,000.
