HC Deb 16 November 1977 vol 939 c214W
Mr. Carlisle

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department what is the maximum prison wage per week paid to those who work (a) flat rate for non-industrial work, (b) piece rate and (c) under special incentive pay schemes; and to how many prisoners the latter scheme applies to.

Mr. John

In England and Wales the maximum weekly payments to prisoners —disregarding overtime—under the three schemes to which the hon. and learned Member refers are as follows:

  1. (a) £1.35 to £1.41, depending upon grade of job;
  2. (b) £1.68;
  3. (c) £1.39 to £2.93 depending up the standard working week and level of skill which apply in the particular shop.

About 4,200 prisoners participate in special incentive schemes.
