HC Deb 10 November 1977 vol 938 cc219-20W
Mr. Lomas

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department what checks are made to ensure that the electoral lists are up to date at the time of registering.

Mr. John:

The electoral registration officer is required to have a house-to-house or other sufficient inquiry made as to persons entitled to be registered and to have prepared and published electors lists, or a draft register, showing the persons appearing to him to be entitled to be registered. It is for each registration officer to decide how to check the accuracy of the lists, but there is an opportunity for claims and objections to be made when the lists, or draft register, are published.
