Mr. Alan Lee Williamsasked the Secretary of State for the Environment 124W allocation of £5 million to be spent in 1978-79 for urgent arrears of maintenance involving public safety.
The Fraenkel recommendations were not related to specific measures required on individual waterways, but were extrapolated on the basis of sample studies. It will therefore be necessary to examine actual requirements in relation to individual waterways from the point of view of public safety. The British Waterways Board will be asked to do this as a matter of urgency.
I am arranging for copies of the Fraenkel Report to be placed in the Library.
