Mr. Sainsbury

asked the Secretary of State for Employment how many civil servants in his Department are wholly or mainly employed in cost efficiency programmes or methods of improving manpower utilisation (a) within the Establishment Division and (b) elsewhere in his Department; and what were the comparable figures in March 1974.

The number of staff in the establishments division of my Department who were engaged on staffing and organisation and methods reviews at 1st April 1977 was 45 and there were a further 78 staff employed elsewhere in the Department and 157 staff employed in other organisations within the Department of Employment group at that date. The comparable figures for 1st April 1974 were 44 and 122 for the Department and 11 for the Training Services Agency.
