In November 1975 there were 6,148 full-time and sandwich students aged 16–18 in tertiary colleges. Information for earlier years is not available. A provisional estimate for November 1976 is about 8,000 such students.

In January 1976 22 non-metropolitan counties had sixth form colleges. Two of these authorities and three other counties had tertiary colleges. Among local education authorites in the metropolitan counties and Greater London there were 10 which had sixth form colleges and none with tertiary colleges.
